Students and staff at Schafer Elementary participated in Autism Acceptance Month with special activities throughout April. Student activities included a door decorating contest, penny wars fundraiser for an autism organization, interactive true/false displays throughout the building, and library display/resources with books available to check out.
This year, Schafer’s fifth grade students won the door decorating contest for having the most creative and informative displays. The Sharks also participated in a school-wide Autism Walk. The walk included each grade level and STARS students joined their grade level peers for the walk.
Ms. Laura Johanson, a STARS teacher at Schafer, helped lead the efforts this year. “Our students are a huge part of the culture at Schafer, and the more we can do to continue bringing awareness and acceptance to the students/staff, the more successful our program and our students are.” Johanson said the activities are always very well received, and kids are excited to participate and do activities with STARS students. Way to go, Sharks!
