On September 25 Jackson Middle School seventh graders explored new books and genres during a recent “Book Tasting” in the school’s Learning Resource Center.
English language arts teacher Jessica Meissner and special education teacher Timothy Feigh transformed the LRC into a restaurant, where students sampled books by reading the first few pages to see which ones sparked their interest.
The restaurant-themed LRC featured snacks, fall leaf table covers and decorative pumpkins. Books were presented in labeled baskets tied with ribbon. Seventh grader Liana Clot described the atmosphere as “nice and cozy.”
“We hoped that students would discover a new genre, author or book that caught their attention and made them excited to read independently,” Meissner said.
Students rotated among tables featuring different genres, recorded their impressions and discussed their finds with classmates.
“Normally, we are learning about the English language during class,” Clot said. “But today we got to read different genres of books and write about them to see if we like them or not.”
A reading adventure well served! Thank you to Ms. Meissner and Mr. Feigh for creating a memorable experience that encouraged students to discover new books. Keep exploring new reads, Jaguars!
