On Sept. 22, Schafer Elementary second graders put their math skills to work during a construction-themed classroom transformation focused on estimating and measuring.
Wearing bright orange safety vests and yellow hard hats, students became young builders for the day.
“As a second grade team, we decided to turn the classroom into a construction site to spark curiosity and excitement,” said second grade teacher Loren Perry. “We wanted to relate real-life scenarios to what we are learning in class with estimating and measuring.”
Students rotated through hands-on stations, measuring lines of tape with meter sticks, measuring photos of nails in centimeters, comparing sizes, estimating and solving word problems.
The activities also put their problem-solving skills to the test. When a student encountered a line of tape longer than a meter stick, they initially weren’t sure what to do.
“We talked through ways we could solve this problem, and the student remembered that we talked in class about marking the spot with our finger or a pencil mark and sliding the meter stick down,” Perry said.
Way to apply your learning, Sharks! Thank you to Mrs. Perry, Mrs. Sotelo Luna and Mrs. Wegner for bringing math to life through this hands-on learning experience.
