STEM Day brings hands-on learning outdoors

On May 8, fifth-grade students from across District 45 gathered on the grounds of Schafer Elementary for STEM Day. The annual event invites fifth graders to engage in hands-on science, technology, engineering and math activities led by seventh-grade students during a collaborative day of outdoor learning.

Students participated in more than 40 lessons and demonstrations, including controlled chemical reactions, hovercraft rides, tower and bridge building, trajectory calculations, probability exercises and more.

STEM Day also provides seventh-grade students with opportunities to develop leadership skills and deepen their understanding of the science behind the experiments.

The event is made possible through the efforts of dozens of parent volunteers, PTA and PTA Council members, and District 45 staff, under the coordination of Jackson Middle School seventh-grade science teacher Krista DePasquale.

Thank you to everyone who helped create a memorable day of learning for our students.
