March 3, 2023 / Schafer

Furry friends at Schafer’s LRC

Traducción

On March 1, three furry friends arrived at Schafer’s LRC to enjoy storytime guided by the Sharks.

Three at a time, Esthela Arena’s 2nd-grade transitional bilingual education students rotated in and out of the LRC to take turns reading to Misty, a redbone coonhound and labrador mix, Sadie, a schichon, and Sweetie, a golden retriever, from PAWSitive Therapy Troupe in Downers Grove.

Diana Wirth, Schafer’s literacy leader, began inviting dogs from the Troupe nearly a decade ago, and due to student demand, the program has remained a monthly event at the LRC.

“The kids really enjoy it,” Wirth says. “It’s a special thing for them.”

With the help of the Troupe’s handlers, Ms. Arena’s class became fast friends with the dogs, who, in addition to exciting stories, were also treated to petting and belly rubs from the kind Sharks. In turn, the Sharks enjoyed practicing their reading skills in the relaxing environment the cuddly dogs helped create. At the end of their 10-minute reading session, the Sharks were treated to photo mementos of their new furry friend.

Thank you for being wonderful listeners, Misty, Sadie, and Sweetie! Way to practice those reading skills, Sharks!
